Cargo condition surveys

Cargo condition surveys may be required for many reasons. In some cases, the purpose is to record condition before loading or dispatch.

In others, it is to verify condition on arrival, at discharge, during storage or before onward movement.

We provide independent attendance to document cargo condition as found at the time of inspection.

Scope of condition surveys

Depending on the cargo and the instructions received, condition surveys may include:

  • general visual examination
  • photo documentation
  • recording of visible condition and packaging state
  • notation of any apparent defects, deterioration or irregularities
  • observations on storage or handling conditions
  • basic quantity or package count observations, where relevant
  • condition reporting for the appointing party

When condition surveys are useful

Condition surveys may be useful:

  • before loading
  • before discharge
  • at delivery
  • at warehouse entry or release
  • before resale, salvage or disposal decisions
  • where condition is disputed between parties
  • where an independent condition record is needed for further handling

Independent record of condition

An independent condition record can help reduce uncertainty later.
Where issues arise after transport, handling or storage, an early survey may provide useful evidence as to the visible condition at the relevant stage.

Our role is not to create unnecessary complication, but to provide a practical and reliable record of the cargo as found.
